The Human Side of AI: What's Actually Happening in Kansas City

Every few weeks, someone in the KC AI Club Slack asks a version of the same question: is AI actually taking jobs here, or is that just national headline noise? The honest answer is more unsettling than a simple "yes" or "no." AI is not producing a wave of mass layoffs, in Kansas City or nationally. It's producing a hiring freeze at the entry level, a hollowing out of the career ladder's middle, and a workplace trust problem almost nobody planned for. Kansas City is living that story early, and mostly in silence.
The Local Paradox: A Tale of Two Investments
Start with the contradiction sitting in our own backyard. Between May 26 and June 1, 2026, Oracle eliminated 539 positions at the former Cerner campus — our mid-career backbone: software developers, system analysts, program managers, IT staff, and consultants, cut with no bumping rights based on seniority. Oracle has never publicly said AI caused these cuts — that link is trade press and analyst inference, not a company statement, and we want to be precise about that. But the pattern is hard to ignore: Oracle took on substantial debt to fund AI data center buildout, and offset part of that cost by eliminating the people who maintain complex hospital systems.
Kansas City's own Chris Kuehle, of Armada Corporate Intelligence, put it plainly: "Almost every job now is going to have to figure out how to deploy AI, or adapt to a sort of a hollowing out of those mid-level jobs."
The irony doesn't stop there. Oracle Health still shows up on local lists of companies hiring AI talent, even as it's responsible for the region's largest AI-linked layoff. Both things are true at once. Meanwhile, half-billion-dollar investments keep landing nearby: Lambda is converting a Kansas City facility into an "AI Factory" with more than 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs, and Meta's northern KC data center complex has been running since August 2025. These are impressive facilities, but not a replacement for what was lost — the Full Employment Council helped fill roughly 75 to 100 operational roles at a Northland data center, paying around $23 an hour. We are trading roughly six-figure health IT careers for $23-an-hour facility jobs, a gut punch to the local economy that deserves to be said plainly rather than buried in a press release.
National Trends: It's a Hiring Story, Not a Layoff Story
Zoom out to the national research, and a clearer, more useful pattern emerges. Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, tracking ADP payroll data from November 2022 through June 2026, found that workers aged 22 to 25 in highly AI-exposed occupations now face a roughly 19% employment gap compared to same-age peers in less-exposed fields — up from 15% just a year earlier. That's a direct threat to our recent graduates from UMKC, JCCC, and KU.
Stanford's own researchers are careful to say they see no widespread, economy-wide displacement associated with AI. The mechanism isn't layoffs, it's reduced hiring. Companies aren't firing juniors, they're simply not hiring them, and the dividing line runs between codified knowledge — the instruction manual, standardized and easy for a model to absorb — and tacit knowledge, the judgment earned by doing the work, which is holding up fine, especially for experienced workers. The authors are explicit that this is a descriptive pattern, not proven causation: "associated with," not "caused by."
That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should, because the traditional way people build tacit knowledge is by doing codified work first. If AI eats the bottom rung, the ladder itself is what's at risk, not any single job.
The Productivity Paradox: Who's Actually Winning?
The labor market is splitting into two tracks, and the split rewards exactly the kind of judgment AI can't replicate. PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, built from more than a billion job ads across 27 countries, found "professionalized" roles — where AI automates routine tasks and amplifies human judgment, think senior analysts, recruiters, radiologists — growing twice as fast as roles where AI just makes work easier for non-experts. Those roles are seeing 42% faster salary growth, and workers with verified AI expertise command a 62% wage premium. Firms leaning hard into AI are hiring more, not less: 52% headcount growth versus 36% at low-AI companies.
On the other side of the ledger, Challenger, Gray & Christmas has tracked 112,713 job cuts citing AI year-to-date through July 2026 — about 24% of all announced cuts, and AI has topped the list of stated reasons for five straight months. Worth a grain of salt: those numbers are self-reported by the companies making the cuts, and "AI" can be a convenient public label for reductions actually driven by debt or other cost pressures. The two tracks aren't contradictory. They're the same shift, viewed from opposite ends of the org chart.
The Trust Problem: Why Your Team Is Using AI in Secret
This might be the most important, least-discussed finding in the whole research pile. Atlassian found that 94% of knowledge workers already use AI regularly. Being honest about it is what gets punished: workers who disclosed their AI use were rated 10 times "lazier" than peers doing identical work, and were 24 points less likely to be recommended for high-visibility projects. Even framing it as "supporting the team" ranked below saying nothing at all.
There's an antidote, and it's simple to state even if it's hard to build: in organizations that actively celebrate AI use, that stigma nearly disappears. Deloitte frames the needed shift as moving from "Human + Machine," where AI gets bolted onto an existing job, to "Human × Machine," where the work itself gets redesigned around trust, decision rights, and psychological safety. Organizations that treat AI as a technology rollout rather than a people problem are 1.6 times more likely to miss their expected ROI.
Without that safety, people go underground. PagerDuty found 66% of office professionals used AI tools at work believing it violated company policy, and 88% put work information into public AI tools — 43% shared emails, 40% shared meeting notes, 31% shared financial or confidential documents. Vague instructions to "use AI," without addressing the trust gap, produce what Harvard Business Review calls "workslop": low-effort AI output that looks polished but shifts the real cognitive burden onto whoever has to fix it — and the recipe for it, HBR notes, is entirely under the control of management.
There's a flip side worth holding onto. ADP found only 22% of workers globally feel strongly confident their job is safe, dropping to 18% among individual contributors. But workers who use AI daily are four times more likely to report strong productivity, and workers who feel secure are six times more likely to be fully engaged and twice as likely to stay. Confidence isn't a nice-to-have — it's the whole game.
Kansas City's Exposure and Industry Reality
The impact on our neighbors is measurable, not abstract. The Beacon estimates more than 40,000 Kansas City-area workers sit in occupations highly vulnerable to automation, with customer service the single largest group at roughly 23,750 workers. Worth being precise about what "exposed" means: a share of tasks is automatable. It does not mean the job disappears tomorrow. It means the work is changing, often faster than the people doing it are being told.
Despite the stakes, local employers are mostly quiet. TKC Group's weekly KC AI Scorecard rates 70 large Kansas City businesses on visible AI signals — press mentions, job postings, website tooling, leadership commentary. As of the week of August 31, 2026, 68 of 70 rated "Silent," with only Oracle Health and T-Mobile reaching "Observer" status and nobody reaching "Mover" or "Innovator." A silent company might still be doing excellent AI work internally and simply not talking about it — but silence from leadership is exactly what the Atlassian and PagerDuty research says drives employees toward secrecy. The two problems feed each other.
Meanwhile, the hiring data tells a more optimistic story. Kansas City's AI-adjacent hiring spans aerospace and defense (averaging around $194,000, anchored by Garmin, host of our September meetup), legal and professional services, fintech, energy, and healthcare — proof the opportunity side of this story is just as real as the disruption side.
Missouri's Preparedness: The Tools We Already Have
Here's the part of this story that should give you some hope: we're not starting from zero. Governor Kehoe signed Executive Order 26-02 in January 2026, establishing a statewide AI strategy framework with a report due at the end of November, including a direct charge to recommend new degree programs, certifications, and apprenticeships in data science and AI systems. The University of Missouri System, including UMKC, is the backbone of that talent pipeline. And Great Jobs KC recently received a $3.8 million grant from the Patterson Family Foundation to expand tuition-free AI and tech training into rural Missouri and Kansas.
As Clyde McQueen of the Full Employment Council puts it, you can't use the same oil in your car for a year straight — you have to change the oil, or you wear out the pistons. Mychal Shaw of Uwazi.ai frames AI itself as a chance to catch up, an access equalizer for communities historically shut out of tech careers. The infrastructure mostly already exists here. What's missing is leadership attention, and the honest conversation that turns training programs people don't know about into training programs people actually use.
Conclusion and Invitation to Garmin
Put all of this together, and the AI story in Kansas City stops looking like a technology story and starts looking like a leadership and culture story. We have the GPUs, the training pipeline, and a state framework with a deadline on the calendar. What we don't have enough of, yet, is honesty — between employers and the employees quietly using AI in the shadows, and between companies and the communities watching them build half-billion-dollar data centers next to a campus that just lost 539 jobs.
